Bethesda Maryland Lore


The name "Bethesda" means "House of Mercy" and we find it mentioned as a place of healing in the New Testament of the Bible. The name came to Bethesda Maryland by way of the Bethesda Meeting House - a place of worship built in 1820. It is located one mile north of the American Inn of Bethesda on Rockville Pike in Bethesda Maryland.

In 1977, the Bethesda Meeting House was certified in the National Registry of Historical Places and Monuments as National Historic Landmark. Because of the continuity of worshippping activities on this site, it is a Living Landmark.

It is noteworthy that two of the largest institutions for research and medicine are located here in Bethesda. The National Institutues of Health and the National Naval Medical Center are located just a short half mile north of the American Inn of Bethesda.
